You may have heard this before, but diets don’t work.
I see this over and over again in my office and with family and friends. Everyone gets excited to start a new program. It’s shiny and new and something to focus on, but (there is always a “but”) over time that newness wears off and we quickly find old habits creeping back in.
The diet culture is sneaky. It uses words like wellness or lifestyle to suck you right in, but the theme is the same. This type of culture perpetuates body shaming, fat phobia, and overall poor self-esteem.
So what do we do? The first step is being able to recognize it and when you do observe diet culture, call it out wherever you hear or see it. Maybe it’s a conversation with someone, on social media, at the hair salon or grocery store, etc….
This is not about judging other people. It’s about noticing how diet culture is everywhere and becoming aware of how it makes you feel about your body and eating habits.
It’s time to stop the cycle.
